After 7 seasons, Dallas Cowboys release running back Ezekiel Elliott.

In a stunning move, the Dallas Cowboys have officially released star running back Ezekiel Elliott after seven seasons with the team. This decision marks the end of an era for the Cowboys, who relied heavily on Elliott's talent and leadership on the field.

Elliott was drafted by the Cowboys with the fourth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft and quickly established himself as one of the league's most dynamic running backs. In his rookie season, he led the league in rushing yards and earned First Team All-Pro honors.

He continued to be a dominant force for the Cowboys over the next several seasons, rushing for over 1,000 yards in each of his first five seasons and earning three Pro Bowl selections.

However, the 2022 season was a rough one for Elliott and the Cowboys. Elliott struggled with injuries and inconsistency, finishing the season with just 613 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns.

The Cowboys missed the playoffs, and rumors began to swirl about Elliott's future with the team.

In the end, it appears that the Cowboys decided to part ways with Elliott in order to free up salary cap space and pursue other options at the running back position. Elliott was set to make over $12 million in the 2023 season, and the Cowboys may have felt that they could not justify that expense given Elliott's declining production and injury history.

While it is certainly a disappointing end to Elliott's tenure with the Cowboys, it is worth remembering the many highlights of his career in Dallas.

He finishes his time with the team with 7,024 rushing yards and 48 touchdowns, and he played a significant role in helping the Cowboys reach the playoffs in three of his seven seasons.

The question now becomes: where will Elliott go next?

He is sure to draw interest from a number of teams around the league, but he may struggle to find a landing spot that offers the same level of opportunity and support that he had in Dallas. Nonetheless, Elliott is still just 27 years old and has plenty of football left in him, so it seems likely that he will continue to be a force in the NFL for years to come.

Overall, the release of Ezekiel Elliott is a reminder that the NFL is a business first and foremost, and that even the most beloved and talented players are not immune to the cold realities of salary cap management. While it is a sad day for Cowboys fans, they can take solace in the fact that they got to witness one of the greatest running backs of his generation in action for seven unforgettable seasons.
