In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court of India has directed the appointment of Election Commissioners on the guidance of a committee comprising the PM, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Chief Justice of India. The decision was made by a bench comprising Justices RF Nariman and BR Gavai.  The ruling comes in response to a petition filed by the Association for Democratic Reforms, which sought greater transparency and accountability in appointing Election Commissioners. The ADR had argued that the appointment process was opaque and prone to political influence. In its ruling, the Supreme Court acknowledged that the Election Commission of India (ECI) plays a critical role in ensuring free and fair elections and that the appointment of Election Commissioners must be carried out transparently and independently.
